Day 1

Mongol Nomadic Show & Khustai National Park

We pick you up from your accommodation at 08:00 and drive about 50 km (around 1 hour on a paved road) to the Mongol Nomadic Camp, home of the Mongol Nomadic Show, a live cultural program set on the open steppe. Watch a ger being assembled and moved by ox cart as in a nomadic migration, see animals being milked and traditional dairy products such as airag (fermented mare's milk) and aaruul (dried curd) being made, and meet yak and camel caravans and herders in traditional dress. Horsemen show off their skills with lassoing and bareback riding, and the program ends with a short folk concert of throat singing, the horsehead fiddle, and folk dance. Enjoy a traditional Mongolian lunch at the camp. Then drive about 50 km (1 hour on a paved road) to Khustai National Park, where takhi wild horses have been reintroduced since 1992. Known in the West as Przewalski's horse, the takhi is the last wild horse subspecies to survive into the 21st century, first described in western Mongolia in the late 1870s by the Russian explorer N. M. Przhevalsky. Spend time hiking in the hills to find the wild horses, with a chance of maral deer and other animals too, and then enjoy a horse ride, no experience required. Finally, drive about 90 km (2 hours, mostly on a paved road) back to Ulaanbaatar, arriving at your accommodation at around 19:00.
