What happens if I get sick or injured in the desert?

Every vehicle in our fleet carries a stocked first-aid kit, offline GPS, and a satellite phone for instant emergency contact, even far outside mobile coverage. Your guide and driver can get you to the nearest town or back to Ulaanbaatar for proper medical care if needed. Because our routes are remote, we strongly recommend travel insurance that covers medical treatment and evacuation. It isn't included in your booking.

Depending on the route, you'll travel in a robust Russian 4x4 Furgon van or a Toyota Land Cruiser, vehicles built for Mongolia's roadless terrain. Every vehicle carries offline GPS navigation, a stocked first-aid kit, and a satellite phone, so your guide can reach help even where there's no mobile signal at all.

I have never ridden a horse before. Can I participate?

Absolutely! Mongolian horses are sturdy, gentle, and highly responsive. Our experienced local horse trainers will select a horse matching your skill level and guide you by hand-held reins until you feel confident. Safety helmets are provided and required for all riding activities.

How do you actually get to the Gobi?

There are no domestic flights on this itinerary. The whole journey is overland by 4x4, and the drive itself is part of the adventure. You'll depart Ulaanbaatar and travel south over several days, stopping at landmarks like the granite rock formations of Baga Gazriin Chuluu along the way, rather than rushing straight to the dunes.

What's actually included in the price, and what costs extra?

Your package price covers all local transport, accommodation, all listed meals, national park and heritage site fees, and your driver and guide. It does not include international flights to/from Ulaanbaatar, travel insurance, alcohol and personal snacks, or tips for your guide and driver. Any add-ons you choose at booking are itemized separately in your price breakdown before you pay.

What happens if weather or road conditions disrupt the itinerary?

Mongolia's weather and roads can change quickly, and your guide and driver will adjust the day's plan for safety when needed. That's a normal part of steppe and desert travel. In the rare case we need to cancel or significantly change your trip entirely, for example due to severe weather, we'll offer a full deposit refund or the option to reschedule to a future departure.

How do you pick us up? Where are the pick-up and drop-off points?

We provide complimentary door-to-door pick-up and drop-off from any hotel, hostel, Airbnb, or even directly from the Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN) in Ulaanbaatar. You can enter your pick-up and drop-off details in our Booking Form, and our driver will meet you right at the lobby with a personalized name card.

Is there phone signal in the Gobi?

Mobile coverage is patchy at best once you leave Ulaanbaatar, with long stretches of desert and steppe with no signal at all. Ger camps and larger towns along the route usually have some coverage; remote nomad family stays typically don't. We recommend telling family or friends in advance that you may be unreachable for a day or two at a time.

Some tourist ger camps offer basic WiFi in a common area, but it can be slow or intermittent, and family homestays generally have none. What's the accommodation really like, night to night (ger vs. tent vs. hotel)?

You won't sleep in a tent on any of our tours. It's traditional gers throughout, though the style varies night to night. Expect a mix of authentic nomad family gers (single wooden beds, warm blankets, heated by a wood or dung-burning stove your hosts will light for you), eco and tourist-class ger camps, and on some nights premium ger camps with en-suite facilities. Ulaanbaatar hotel stays aren't included before or after your tour, though a pre-tour night in the city is available as an add-on on some packages.

What are the bathroom facilities really like?

It depends on where you're staying that night. Local nomad homesteads have basic wooden outhouses, simple but functional. Tourist and eco ger camps have modern facilities with hot showers and western flush toilets. Your itinerary mixes both, so it's worth packing hand sanitizer and being ready for a more rustic night here and there.

What will I actually eat, and can you accommodate dietary restrictions or allergies?

Meals are home-cooked, traditional Mongolian food: think Khorkhog (stone-cooked barbeque), Khushuur (fried meat pastries), Aaruul (dried curd), and hearty stews, plus camp-cooked breakfasts and dinners. We can usually accommodate vegetarian diets and common allergies with advance notice. Just let us know in the Special Requests field when you book, ideally as early as possible, since ingredient options are more limited once you're out in remote nomad areas.

Your guide will always be able to communicate in English, and we also have Korean-speaking guides available for our Korean travelers. Just let us know your preferred language when you book. Drivers don't always speak English themselves, but your guide is with you throughout the trip to translate, including during visits with nomadic host families. Other travelers on group departures come from all over, and our reviews alone span the UK, France, and Japan, so English is generally the common language among the group, though this varies trip to trip.
