4-Day Genghis Khan Birthplace Join Tour
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Ulaanbaatar → Tsonjin Boldog → Berkh → Khukhuur Steppe
The journey begins toward Khentii Province, the birthplace of Chinggis Khaan. Stop first for photos at the Chinggis Khaan Equestrian Statue complex at Tsonjin Boldog, where a 40 m stainless-steel statue of the great khan on horseback gazes east toward his homeland. Continue to Chinggis City, the provincial center, for lunch, then visit the local museum of Khentii Province, followed by the Berkh underground mining museum in the old fluorspar mining town of Berkh. In the afternoon you arrive at Steppe Horse Camp on the Khukhuur steppe, where Temüjin and Boorchi are believed to have first formed their legendary friendship, and are welcomed with traditional airag (fermented mare's milk). Join the herders in milking mares, catching foals, gathering cattle, and penning calves, and after dinner you can ride out independently across the steppe. The evening ends with songs around a warm campfire.
Tengeriin Andgai Complex → Onon River → Dadal
The day begins with a traditional Mongolian breakfast, followed by a guided tour of the Tengeriin Andgai (Oath of Brotherhood) complex. Continue to the Shikhikhutag complex, dedicated to Shigi Khutugh, Chinggis Khaan's adopted brother and the first supreme judge of the empire, where the laws of the Great Mongol State were written down. On the way, pass through wetlands where migratory birds nest and spend the summer, stop to watch the birds, and cross the Onon River to arrive in Dadal, the birthplace of Chinggis Khaan. After lunch, visit Deluun Boldog and its illuminated statue of Chinggis Khaan, taste the water of Khajuu Bulag, the spring where he grew up, and step inside a Buryat house to learn about the culture of the Buryat people who live in this forested corner of Mongolia. After dinner, the evening is yours to rest.
Duurlig Nars Xiongnu Tombs → Binder → Great Khuraldai Complex
After breakfast, visit the Duurlig Nars tombs, a cemetery of burial mounds from the Xiongnu (Hun) period some 2,000 years ago, which offers valuable insight into early nomadic culture and funeral practices in Mongolia. Whisper a wish to the Wish Tree, then continue to Binder district for lunch. In the afternoon, visit the Great Khuraldai complex at the place where the Great Mongol Empire was proclaimed at the assembly of 1206, when Temüjin took the title Chinggis Khaan. Then explore the beautiful Yalgui gorge and the Narsan corridor, a tunnel-like avenue of pine trees, and walk around Tsagaan Lake to watch migratory birds. End the day with a visit to a herder's farm before returning to camp to rest.
Khurkh River Valley → Ulaanbaatar
After breakfast, travel along the Khurkh River valley to Binder Ovoo, a sacred place and pilgrimage site associated with Chinggis Khaan, believed to be one of the places where he was proclaimed leader and later honored. Then visit the Rashaan Khad rock drawings, ancient petroglyphs and inscriptions carved into the rock surface that depict early human life, animals, and cultural symbols from many different eras. Next, see the Uglugch Wall, an important historical and archaeological site in the Khentii Mountains with a long dry-stone wall, ancient rock inscriptions, and burial remains. The tour then joins the paved road for the long drive back to Ulaanbaatar, with lunch and a coffee break served on the way.
