2-Day Khustai Nomad Family Homestay
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Ulaanbaatar β Khustai National Park β Nomadic Family
We pick you up from your accommodation at 08:00 and drive about 100 km (2 hours on a paved road) west to Khustai National Park, where takhi wild horses have been reintroduced since 1992. Known in the West as Przewalski's horse, the takhi is the last wild horse subspecies to survive into the 21st century. Russian explorer N. M. Przhevalsky first described it in western Mongolia in the late 1870s, but it later died out in the wild and survived only in zoos until breeding programs brought it home. Spend time hiking at leisure in the surrounding mountains to look for the wild horses, and with luck you may also see maral deer and other animals. Then drive about 25 km (1 hour on dirt roads) to a nomadic herding family, where you have lunch in their ger. Afterward, set off on a one-hour horse ride through the Tuul River valley and up the mountain for a view, surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature. No riding experience is required. Spend the evening with your hosts and the night in their ger.
Nomadic Family β Ulaanbaatar
Wake to the quiet of the steppe and, if you're up early, watch the family go about their morning chores, from milking to letting the herds out to graze. After breakfast, drive back to Ulaanbaatar, about 80 km and 2 hours, mostly on a paved road. We take you to your accommodation, arriving at around 11:00, leaving the rest of the day free.
